Laboratory Testing Process

Understanding the journey of your laboratory test

1

Test Ordering

The laboratory testing process begins with:

  • Your healthcare provider ordering specific tests based on your symptoms, medical history, or as part of routine health screening
  • Receiving clear instructions for any necessary test preparation (fasting, medication adjustments, etc.)
  • Scheduling your laboratory visit or proceeding directly to the collection area with your test order

2

Sample Collection

During the sample collection phase:

  • Our trained phlebotomists or laboratory technicians collect the required specimens (blood, urine, etc.)
  • We use standardized collection procedures to ensure sample quality and patient comfort
  • Samples are properly labeled with unique identifiers to prevent mix-ups
  • Specimens are prepared for transportation to the laboratory processing area

3

Sample Processing

Once samples arrive at the laboratory:

  • Specimens are registered in our laboratory information system
  • Samples undergo initial processing (centrifugation, aliquoting, etc.) as required for specific tests
  • Specimens are distributed to appropriate laboratory sections for testing
  • Quality checks are performed to ensure sample integrity

4

Testing and Analysis

During the testing phase:

  • Samples are analyzed using appropriate laboratory methods and equipment
  • Quality control procedures are performed alongside patient samples
  • Results are generated and verified by laboratory professionals
  • Abnormal results may undergo additional testing or review

5

Result Reporting

The final phase involves:

  • Laboratory specialists reviewing and validating test results
  • Results being reported to your healthcare provider through electronic or paper reports
  • Critical or significantly abnormal results being communicated immediately to healthcare providers
  • Results becoming available to patients through our secure patient portal
  • Your healthcare provider interpreting the results in the context of your overall health

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about laboratory testing

For most routine laboratory tests, appointments are not required. You can walk in with your test order during our regular operating hours. However, for certain specialized tests that require specific preparation or timing, an appointment may be recommended. If you're unsure, please call our laboratory department to confirm whether an appointment is needed for your specific test.

Preparation depends on the specific tests ordered. Some tests require fasting (no food or drink except water) for 8-12 hours before the test, while others have no special requirements. Your healthcare provider should provide specific instructions when ordering the tests. Common preparations include: staying well-hydrated (unless instructed otherwise), avoiding certain medications before the test (as directed by your doctor), and bringing your test order and identification. If you're unsure about preparation requirements, please contact our laboratory or your healthcare provider.

Turnaround times vary depending on the type of test. Routine tests like complete blood counts and basic metabolic panels are typically available within 24 hours. More specialized tests may take 2-5 days. Culture tests for bacteria may take several days as we need to allow time for organisms to grow. Your healthcare provider will receive your results as soon as they are available, and you can access them through our patient portal. For urgent tests, results may be expedited and communicated directly to your healthcare provider.

You can access your laboratory results through several methods: our secure online patient portal (the fastest and most convenient option), directly from your healthcare provider during your follow-up appointment, by requesting a printed copy from our medical records department, or by calling our laboratory customer service. For the patient portal, you'll need to register if you haven't already. Please note that some results may be released only after your healthcare provider has reviewed them, particularly for sensitive or complex tests.

Fear of needles (needle phobia) is common, and our phlebotomists are trained to work with patients who experience anxiety about blood draws. Let our staff know about your concerns before the procedure. We can use techniques to minimize discomfort, such as using smaller needles when appropriate, applying numbing cream, or using distraction techniques. You may also find it helpful to bring a supportive friend or family member, avoid looking at the needle, practice deep breathing, or lie down during the blood draw to prevent lightheadedness.
